Background

Council launched their “Recycling 2.0” service in response to dramatic changes in the waste industry and forthcoming state government legislation. The service introduced new kinds of bins, new restrictions on what items go in each of them and a new schedule for when they would be picked up.

THE ASK

100,000 residents would need to change how they managed their waste, and a digital platform was identified as a key way to support this.

Council had ambitions for an app as the foundation for increased digital engagement with residents and wanted to deliver a flagship open source solution that other councils could also leverage.

The Fellowship team quickly built a strong working relationship with subject matter experts in Council’s multi-disciplinary project team.

They led research and engagement activities with residents to determine the most useful functionality for an MVP release and worked to integrate various data sources with the app’s interface.

A mobile app for iOS and Android was launched after 3 months of development, and has had over 1,000 downloads to date. The fellowship has been extended for a second term for further research and development of new features.
